Twitter Power 2.0 – How I Finally Signed Up For Twitter

A few nights ago, some time between “Goodnight, my beautiful kids” and “Why have I not turned into a pumpkin already?”, I finally got myself signed up on Twitter.

Not only did I get signed up on Twitter, but I also

  • created my Twitter profile
  • wrote my bio
  • inserted a photo (which is awesome because it means I don’t look like an EGG!)
  • started following some amazing bloggers
  • AND sent out my very first Tweet.

I have to admit that, considering how long it took me to finally get around to it, I was fairly pleased with how much I achieved in just a couple of hours!

But if it wasn’t for Joel Comm’s excellent book, Twitter Power 2.0, I might never have made it to Twitter at all.

(And if it wasn’t for the many piles of books, papers and craft supplies that currently clutter way too many surfaces in my house to tell you about, I might have made it there a whole lot sooner!)

When I first bought Joel’s book, a few months ago now, I eagerly devoured the first several chapters in one sitting. Never mind that my kids’ swimming class was in the lane a half meter away, joyfully splashing water on my new book and I.

Then I “lost” the book, and spent the next several weeks wondering where it could possibly be. (And wishing I didn’t have quite so many piles to search through to find it.)

Because, having read those first chapters, I knew that all the information and instructions I needed to get my Twitter account started were there laid out for me if only I could find that book.

Of course the timing was perfect when the book did eventually appear – in a pile above my scrapbooking supplies box as I gathered supplies for my beach art holiday.

A bit of extra holiday reading, and I came back all refreshed, a little more knowledgable and ready to finally get tweeting!

Could you do with a bit of Twitter Power (2.0) too?

If you’re already on Twitter, and have been tweeting for months or years, you might think it’s a bit pathetic that I’ve been feeling so proud of myself – especially if it took you all of 5 minutes to get yourself signed up, without the weeks or months of procrastination (and other obstacles!) that I experienced.

If you’re not on Twitter, maybe you wonder what all the fuss is about and why would anyone want to waste their life tweeting – especially when it only seems to get people in trouble anyway.

But if you’re not on Twitter and you want to start tweeting, I can recommend Joel’s book as an excellent resource to get you started.

Although the book was specifically written for those using Twitter to market and grow their businesses, the step by step instructions in these first few chapters:

  • Getting Started the Right Way on Twitter
  • Building a Following on Twitter
  • The Art of the Tweet

will be of value to anyone wanting to learn how Twitter works.

If you’re wanting to gain a better understanding of how Twitter can help grow your business, I suspect that this is one of the best resources available.

At the very least, you’ll find all the information you need so that you don’t look like an egg when you start following your friends, potential customers and those people you admire!

You can buy a copy of Twitter Power 2.0 here from Amazon. Or you could borrow a copy from your local library. If it’s not on their shelves, it should be, so don’t be afraid to ask them to order it!

In the meantime, I’ll be on the lookout for a book on Google+. Because while I’ve finally gotten onto Twitter in the past week, the rest of the world are discovering this latest social media platform. There’s definitely no danger this week of anyone calling me an “Early Adopter”. I wish!

Brigid

    1. Hey Farouk,
You’re definitely not alone, as I’ve had a number of people say this week that they don’t ‘get’ Twitter. This is definitely a great book to help you with it! It really spells out clearly how to use Twitter, in simple steps. Let me know how you go!

  2. It’s taken me a few years to “get” Facebook….. now it might be time to “get” Twitter too! I might just procrastinate a bit longer tho!!! I look forward to tweeting along with you at some stage soon!

    1. Looking forward to “tweeting” with you when you do get there Kerrie! I’m loving being on Twitter discovering new things and new people to follow every day. Think you’d love it too!
